Llandudno is one of Cape Town’s hidden gems on the Atlantic seaboard, exclusive and tucked away on the steep slopes below the winding Victoria Road.

What’s Llandudno all about?

Exclusive and tucked away on the steep slopes below the winding Victoria Road between Camps Bay and Hout Bay, this upmarket seaside suburb boasts some of the most expensive residential property in the country. Quiet with no street lights, shops or commercial activities, Llandudno has a handful of luxury villas available to rent for holidaymakers who seek exclusivity.

Does it have its own beach?

It has a beautiful 200m sandy beach, which is surrounded by large granite boulders and backed by natural bush, Judas Peak and Klein Leeukoppie (‘little Lion’s head), which provides a dramatic mountain backdrop. It is a popular surfing spot and also provides access for the walk to Sandy Bay, an isolated beach is still popular with nudists.

Is the beach clean and safe?

The beach has international Blue Flag status, which means it has to comply with no less than 33 criteria covering Environmental Education and Information; Water Quality; Environmental Management and Safety and Services during the Blue Flag season from 1 December to 31 March every year.

Can I swim at Llandudno beach?

The sea is quite treacherous for swimmers with strong currents and icy cold water, however, the beach is popular for sunbathing and sundowners, though some people opt for the surrounding granite boulders, which retain the sun’s heat and provide a great view of the sun setting over the sea. The rocky headland to the left of the beach is known as Sunset Rocks.

Where did it get its unusual name?

On 26 September 1903 the Kleinkommetjie Bay valley was named Llandudno after the North Wales seaside resort of Llandudno, which means “Parish of Saint Tudno” in Welsh, because of striking geographical similarities.

What’s the historic significance of Llandudno?

The Logies Bay promontory to the right of the beach has several caves among the granite boulders, which were used by Khoisan ‘strandlopers’ (beach walkers), as evidenced by a nearby shell midden excavated in 1953. The Strandlopers is a colonial term for the San-derived people who lived by hunting and gathering food along the beaches during the 1800s.

Is exclusivity guaranteed in Llandudno?

The magical charm of this treasured little suburb all contributes to Llandudno’s appeal. Very limited parking at the beach generally keeps day visitors at bay. Only a selected handful of sought-after luxury villas are available for discerning guests who value exceptional settings, upmarket luxury, style and comfort to help create precious holiday memories.
