Wellington is situated in the heart of the Cape Winelands at the foot of the Groenberg, a mere 45 minutes’ drive away from Cape Town. This charming town is home to several wineries located right on the banks of the Kromme River. There is such an array of activities to enjoy including scenic drives, hiking trails, and the famous wine route, with its many wine tasting opportunities.
Wellington lies on the banks of the River Kromme in a magnificent valley, which is quite literally home to almost 90% of the country’s vines. The wine route is extremely popular and much shorter than many others in the Cape region. The cellars are all within easy driving distance from each other, so you can explore a few farms in one day.
Wellington is also well known for its fruit production and the local berry farm has a variety of strawberries, youngberries, raspberries and gooseberries for sale, as well as private guided tours, where you are allowed to do your own berry picking! It is a ton of fun for the entire family and the children will enjoy eating their bounty after the picking stops.
The Limietberg Nature Reserve offers visitors access to nine different hiking trails all along fields of Fynbos. The Wellington Wine Walk is a three-day hiking excursion in the foothills of the Hawequa Mountains where you hike through vineyards, olive orchards, fields of buchu and vine cutting plantations while you overnight at one of the many Wellington guest houses.
History buffs must explore the Wellington Museum in Church Street as well as the Dutch Reformed Church. The Bain’s Kloof Pass is a historical monument and another must see attraction. The pass was originally built in 1853 and links Wellington to Ceres as well as Worcester. The narrow twisting road provides superb views of the valley below.
Wellington is best viewed on foot or on horseback so you can take in the breathtaking scenery of Fynbos, the olive groves and the interesting historical buildings dotted all over the area.
