Milnerton, with a gorgeous white beach and unobstructed vistas of Table Mountain, Signal Hill and Robben Island, is a popular holiday destination.
Milnerton is located about 11km away from the heart of Cape Town. It is well known for its beautiful beach, sparkling lagoon, a top class golf course and its close proximity to most of the region’s hotspots, which include Table Mountain and the Southern African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds (SANCCOB).
It is known as one of the oldest suburbs along the northern Table Bay area and is truly blessed with outstanding views over Table Bay looking out at Table Mountain.
Milnerton is a popular residential area with a gorgeous white beach, a superb 18 hole golf course, and numerous sports clubs. The key attraction of Sunset Beach is that its heaven for surfers, windsurfers and kite surfers alike.
Incredible views are never too far away, with unobstructed vistas of the City Bowl, Table Mountain, Signal Hill and Robben Island. It is also home to a beautiful lagoon, which is a 500m walk from the beach and very popular with canoeists.
Milnerton (named after Lord Milner, Governor of the Cape Colony) was originally a small village that was built in 1897 and links Cape Town to the rest of the West Coast. During August and September, the West Coast and its surrounding areas are transformed into a magical wonderland bursting with colour when the semi-desert flowers start to bloom.
Milnerton beach is situated along the Atlantic Ocean seaboard. It is a popular spot for surfers who claim it has some of the best waves to ride when the South-Easter starts blowing. Enjoy a walk on the beach during the evening as the sun sets across the ocean, or take a stroll along the Lagoon while you enjoy the view of Table Mountain.
Milnerton’s beach is kept spotless and local council members make sure cleaners do a daily patrol on the beach to remove any waste. There are also rubbish bins located within close proximity so that the beach and its surrounding areas remain relatively clean.
Milnerton also boasts with two nature reserves, the Rietvlei Wetland Reserve, home to the Milnerton Lagoon and the Milnerton Racecourse Nature Reserve that is situated inside the race track of the old Milnerton Racecourse, now known as the Royal Ascot residential precinct.
The suburb has a fascinating marine history and one of the must-see sights you can’t miss is the 21 meters high Milnerton lighthouse. According to the locals, the coastline from Green Point to Milnerton has seen more shipwrecks than any other coastline in the country with more than 100 ships sinking along with it.
Milnerton has so many wonderful attractions and it is a famous hotspot for jet skiing, surfing, body boarding, rafting down the lagoon, fishing, prawn fishing, and canoeing. The lagoon is a favourite among many local canoeists that enjoy the gorgeous view, as well as a spectacular canoeing adventure.
Other attractions include Zonnekus – a beautiful Dutch home which was the first house built on Woodbridge Island in 1929, the golf course and the lighthouse.

The beach in Milnerton is rather exposed and locals say it always offers dependable surfing conditions throughout the year. Winter is the ideal time for surfing here when the wind direction blows from the east towards the southeast.
The best time of year to visit will depend on your personal interests and your budget. The majority of the hotels and lodges charge high rates in the peak summer holiday season between December and January, but after that, they start to decrease their rates radically from May to September, so if you are looking for the most bang for your buck, this is the best time to come.
There are also lots of things to see at this time of year when the whale watching season starts and the desert flowers are in full bloom. The only concern is the rainy weather and even though the Cape does have many warm sunny days, most of the region’s rainfall occurs during the winter months.
If you want to relax on the beach and play in the ocean the summer time between October and November is the best time to holiday in Milnerton.
