Bloubergstrand

Bloubergstrand (Blue Mountain Beach) is mainly a residential area in Cape Town and is located along the shores of Table Bay, about a 30 minute drive from Cape Town International Airport and approximately 20 minutes from Cape Town city centre. Bloubergstrand is well known for its spectacular and classic views of Table Mountain and Robben Island, as well as beautiful, long white sandy beaches, attracting many local and international visitors.

The area derives its name from an inland hill called “Blouberg” (Blue Mountain) and Bloubergstrand means “blue mountain beach” in Afrikaans (a language unique to South Africa) and is located between Table View Beach and Big Bay.

Bloubergstrand caters to both young and old, as well as everyone in between with a wide choice of activities on offer ranging from taking part in a variety of extreme water sports like surfing, kite boarding and wind surfing to taking a stroll along one of the white sandy beaches and exploring the small pools and rocky outcrops, sun bathing and taking a refreshing dip in the Atlantic Ocean, or trying your luck at surf angling from the shores of one of the beaches a little bit further up the West Coast (provided you have the appropriate fishing permit).

Of course if you just want to relax then enjoying a cocktail, or a seafood feast at one of the many bars or restaurants dotted along the beachfront promenade as you watch the sun set on the horizon, is also at your fingertips.

Big Bay is one of the main beaches in Bloubergstrand and is considered a paradise for surfers, due to the constant trade winds, with a number of local and international competitions being held there annually. Little Bay is located next to Big Bay and is the ideal beach for family excursions with the children, while Dolphin Beach is a wide, spacious and un-crowded beach that’s also popular with kite boarders.

The Bloubergstrand area is also situated within a Marine Nature Reserve and in season visitors can see Cape Fur Seals, as well as Southern Right Whales, Heaviside’s Dolphins, Humpback Dolphins and even occasionally Killer Whales in the bay.

The busiest time of the year is during the peak summer holiday season, which roughly falls between November and February. The weather is sunny and hot during the day with temperatures ranging from around 25°C to 30°C, while the evenings are generally warm and pleasant. From the beginning of April until roughly the end of May the days get cooler and the evenings get colder providing ideal hiking conditions. Winter in Cape Town is from June until September and the days are mainly cold and rainy, while the evenings are freezing cold.
