The brief to the architects of this amazing villa was to design a holiday home for two friends, to capture the essence of the Cape Town lifestyle and maximize all the great aspects of the site (sea and mountain views, orientation, proximity to the beach). This prompted the approach of having two bedroom pods elevated on the first floor level, each containing a master suite and a guest bedroom, connected with a floating concrete bridge through the double volume living space. This equalised approach makes Magnetic a great house for two families, or a group of friends.

The house is entered through the sandstone entrance court yard by way of a timber bridge over a koi pond. The double volume glass façade gives a spectacular view through the house toward the ocean from the main living floor. The living and dining areas are defined by a feature pebbled gas fireplace, open on 3 sides, with a superb award-winning kitchen at the far end. In accordance with the focus on blurring the boundaries between inside and outside, all living rooms flow onto the pool deck, thus creating an amorphous entertainment space incorporating the whole ground floor level. Spaces are subtley defined with changes in level and finish, rather than with walls.

The exceptionally long pool is truly spectacular, built along the front of the deck and hugging the one side of the house in an L shape, almost pulled right into the living space, which gives the feeling of dining on the pool deck rather than indoors. The sustainable hardwood 'Jarrah' decking was also used for the dining room floor resulting in these two spaces flowing together, and the quirky use of an exterior white concrete dining table paired with plush suede chairs further enhance this effect.

The site has both stunning mountain and sea views to be enjoyed, leading to the use of double volume glazing on both sides of the bridge linking the two 'sleeping pods'. Motorized slatted timber sunscreens on the seaward side, controlled via the automated home system, temper the hot afternoon sun. The two bedroom pods also form protection for the pool deck with it's outdoor lounge area, dining table, outdoor grill and spa.

The village of Camps Bay, with its restaurants, shopping, tennis, promenade and famous beach is a short walk down the hill.
